A Few Degrees Freer Today

“Am I, or am I not, a free agent?”

“A man is as free as he chooses to make himself, never an atom freer”, replied the Raven

From Lilith: A Romance by George Macdonald

The bird in the foreground isn’t quite in focus. That’s the fault of me, the photographer, also slightly of the off-brand zoom lens; but mainly of the fact that it was leaning against the glass of the front door that hasn’t been cleaned in recent memory.

Excitable photographer+Multilayered subpar glass+Moving subject

Almost, But Not Quite.

I’ve been working my way through the old book Lilith: A Romance slowly, and this conversation between the man and the Raven has been steeping in my thoughts.

Want to be a few degrees freer than you already are? I know I do.

Over here what that looks like is posting the photos anyway.

Showing perfectionism to the door. Politely, of course;)

It will be back, like your Lookie-Lou neighbor with an opinion about all of the things. And I will wear out a path showing it to the front door if I have to so that the photos get kept, the words find a place to call home.

What does a few degrees freer look like for you today?

  1. I think for me, having 3 littles under the age of 4, being a few degrees freer means not letting the mess of constant toys and clutter bother me. It’s so hard because at times the constant barrage of the same toys and socks all over the house make me pace in anxiety circles and scream. I clean it up in the morning and it somehow looks worse after lunch.

  2. Your girls are beautiful and happy but the mess is maddening! I have one countertop in the kitchen that is all mine, I clear it off and keep it looking good no matter what. It’s the little things, some days that’s all we have!!!
