When You’re Alone

Posted on

The other day I took the kids to school, it was my birthday.

It was their first day all four of them in school at the same time in weeks.

So I went for a walk, to feel less alone.

I think we can be too alone, not alone enough, or both at the same time.

Do we all feel a little in that last category these days?

I told a friend that I think there’s a trick to feelings.

When we’re alone, we’re required to feel them; like it or not, right?

I think the trick is to not be afraid of them.

To not be afraid to feel happy, to feel sad, or even to feel afraid.

Alone with our feelings isn’t a curse, it’s a sitting in the light.

Truth heals the fear-cracks in our souls, where the pain seeps out and we can’t ever seem to feel full.

That’s why feelings without fear so often turn to deep joy.

Joy in the middle of being alone, because we can stay full just from the presence of the One who loves us more than anyone can.

May Jesus, the light of the world, the highest love of our minds and hearts and souls, heal us and fill us with truth.

The knowledge that we are never actually alone.
